Week 1 June: Blue Tit Bird Cake Recipe

A bird cake for Blue Tits

You will need:

  • 300g bird seed mix
  • 150g raisins
  • 150g peanuts
  • 250g block of suet or lard
  • Empty, clean yoghurt pot/s or other small container/s (depending on how many you want to make)
  • String
  • Scissors
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon

This recipe will make a lot of bird cakes – the exact number will depend on the size of the pots you are using.

How to make it!

  1. Before you begin making your bird cake, remove the lard from the refrigerator and allow it to warm to room temperature – this will make it easier to work with.
  2. Ask your adult helper to make a hole in the base of your empty yoghurt pot.
  3. Thread your string through the hole and tie a knot on the inside, big enough that the string does not slip back through the pot. Make sure you leave enough string to tie your finished bird cake to a tree.
  4. Cut your lard block into small chunks and place the chunks into your mixing bowl.
  5. Add the raisins, bird seed mix and peanuts to the lard and start mixing with a spoon. You might need to use your hands to make sure your ingredients are properly mixed together.
  6. Fill your yoghurt pot/s with your bird cake mixture and place it in a fridge to set – this should take around an hour.
  7. Now hang your finished bird cake/s from your bird table or tree and watch the Blue Tits and other garden visitors tuck in.
