The House Martin
The House Martin like The Swallow and The Swift is a summer visitor to the United Kingdom. The house martin is a small bird with glossy blue-black upper parts and pure white under parts. It has a distinctive white rump with a forked tail and white feathers covering its legs and toes. The bird's mud nest is usually sited below the eaves of buildings.
House Martin chicks have brown crowns and the white areas are a buff-grey.
House Martins are often easily confused with Sand Martins, but these are smaller, brown and lack the white rump.
What does The House Martin eat?
Insects, such as flies, beetles and aphids.
House Martins feed on small insects while flying. They will on occasions visit gardens if they wish to collect mud for their nests.
