Perfect Pollinators Glossary 4

 habitat: The natural home of an animal, plant or other living thing.

tubes: Popular habitats where solitary bees lay their eggs.

bank: Land sloping downwards. Red Mason Bee will often make their nest in a bank facing the sun.

cavity: An empty space (long hole) in wood or mortar (brick) which a Red Mason Bee will use as a nest.

soil: A layer of earth in which plants grow and solitary bees make their nest.

wings: All bees have 4 wings. The front and rear wings hook together to form one big pair of wings and unhook for easy folding when not flying.

sting: The small sharp-pointed organ at the end of the abdomen of a bee. The sting from a Red Mason does not hurt like that of a Bumble or Honey Bee.

insect: A small arthropod that has six legs and one or two pairs of wings.

anthropod: a type of animal with no spine, a hard outer skin, legs with bones joined together, and a body divided into different parts, for example a bee, spider, crab, or ant.

Thorax: The middle section of the body of an insect, between the head and the abdomen.

pesticide: Chemicals used for destroying insects that are often harmful to plants and other animals.
