The Great Tit

The Great Tit is the largest bird in the British Tits family and is easy to recognise with its yellow breast and long black central band which runs from its chin to its tail.  It has a black and white head.  It is a really colourful bird. The tail is blue grey with white outer feathers. Females have less glossy caps and less black on the breast. Great Tits are birds of woodland, parks and gardens where they nest in holes in trees and search in the branches and leaves for grubs to feed their chicks.

What do Great Tits eat?

Diet: Caterpillars and spiders, seeds, nuts and berries.

During the spring breeding period, Great tits prefer to feed mainly on spiders and flies, as well as insects taken from leaves. Throughout the rest of the year Great tits switch over to seeds and fruits, which they collect from deciduous trees and shrubs.
