Welcome to Bird Box 2017 launching Monday 13th March 2017

Thank you for registering your school to take part in the 2017 Schools’ Bird Box project. We look forward to watching the live stream from your webcam over the coming weeks and hopefully seeing lots of activity in your Bird Box. To help everyone get streaming please look out in your e-mail inbox this week for streaming instructions from my colleague Tim Hall.

New for 2017 – Great learning opportunity for Bird Box schools!

  1. Help the BTO to monitor the state of the UK bird population.
To support the work of the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) this spring and summer we hope many of the schools will register and join the BTO National Recording Scheme (NRS) and during the summer every 4 to 5 days inform the BTO about the nest activity in your Bird Box. To register your school and join just complete and return the registration form and download the free online app.

For more information please read the attached NRS Quick Start Guide and click here for the web link.

  1. Follow Bird Box on the SeeNature Bird Box website

We are launching our 2017 Bird Box Education programme on Monday 13th March 2017. Encourage your pupils every day throughout March, April, May and June to visit the website in school and at home to find out information about our bird population and to try out some of the great things to do! New posts every day include:

Monday – Chatter Box. Weekly bird reports with an audio commentary. Topics covered include: Bird Habitats, Life Cycles, Reproduction, Food Chains, Flight, Adaptation and Conservation, Migration and Protection.

Tuesday - All about birds: Birds that visit our school grounds. Each week we will be posting information about the birds that visit your school grounds. Birds featured will include: Robins, Blue Tits, Great Tit, Blackbirds, Sparrows, Starlings, Chaffinch, Goldfinches and Woo Pigeons.

Wednesday - Pupil Zone: Look out each week for things to do and things to make! New for 2017 will be our weekly Bird Quiz. Challenge your pupils to find out information about the birds featured each week. The answers to each quiz will be posted on the website every Friday afternoon before your pupils leave school.

Thursday – Bird Spotting. Tell us by posting on the website if you have seen in your school grounds or local neighbourhood the bird that we are featuring that week. All bird sightings will be uploaded and displayed on our Bird Spotters Google Map!

Friday – School Reports. Each week click on the link to find out what actions schools in the project are taking to encourage birds to visit their grounds. To share what you school is doing just e-mail us a short report (250 words) and a selection of photographs (maximum 6.)
